ILP "Participation"- Technology Sandbox

The Technology Sandbox at FSU

1. My experience:

Going to the Technology Sandbox at FSU, I  was able to learn a lot about the different interactive and innovative technologies that exist and how to use them. While in the technology sandbox I  was able to learn about multiple interactive learning tools such as the Smart Board, and two other versions of a technology white board that would be useful in the classroom. While all three different versions has their differences, these smart boards seem very useful in accommodating people with disabilities, young students, and improving interaction and tangibility in the classroom. Additionally, another tool that was shown to us in this tour were the 3-D Printers. This specific tool had multiple uses, but when applied made me realize that there are many more uses for teaching and interaction than meets the eye. These printers could be used (similar to that of Virtual reality) to tangibly learn about anatomy, animals; there are endless possibilities. That being said, Virtual reality was also another interesting tool that was displayed which had many apparent benefits to learning such as its life like qualities and abilities to transform a learning environment.

2. Notes from the experience:

  • Three different kinds of smart boards (all different brands)
  • Two different kinds of 3-D printers
    • one that you can place and object inside to print
    • one that will print based off of an image
    • both useful for tangible teaching (anatomy etc.)
  • Virtual Reality technology
    • the cube-allows you to animate any object or learning graphic in 3D using an app on your phone
      • EX: you download the app, hold up the cube and as you rotate the cube it will show you the various levels and annotations of the heart, its functions etc.
    • The VR headset- allows you to put on VR glasses and transport you to a different environment that can be displayed on a computer monitor
      • this could be useful for displaying learning environments, history lessons, etc.
  • The Painting tool
    • (specifically)the monitor technology that allows you to create, paint, etc with a pen and a monitor.
    • environmentally friendly
    • very applicable for children or people with disabilities who have difficulties with real paint and supplies.
3. Picture of the Technology/experience

(no photos were taken of the actual technology sandbox, but this is an illustration of the Smart board that we learned about).
